DUTIES:

Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Quality, this position will be responsible to facilitate the daily operation of the Environmental Quality division. Direct and maintain the flow of work carried out by staff in the lab and field on a daily basis. Assign duties to staff and check the sampling and lab analysis is done in accordance with standard procedures. Ensure that laboratory data is complete, accurate, reported and accomplished in a most efficient manner on a timely basis. Requisition and receive chemicals and lab supplies. Ensure that all complaints and reports of spills are answered and proper action is taken.  Investigate and prepare reports on unusual problems of plant operations; assist plant operations staff in optimizing process functions. Responsible for maintaining and ensuring the laboratory analytical and testing equipment are functioning properly. Will be proficient in the use and maintenance of all of the Division’s equipment including software for the data management system, ICP spectrophotometer, flowmeters, samplers and other equipment as required. Will be required to monitor, maintain and review ongoing employee performance and evaluations including lost time, attendance, punctuality and update and review Health & Safety issues with staff; train new employees in safety, analytical methods and sampling procedures; maintain and update WHMIS sheets; prepare, develop and document new and existing Division Procedures Manuals. Will perform Occupational Health & Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health and Safety Program.  Will perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a post secondary school Community College diploma in Science (Biology or Chemistry) or related field, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and four (4) years of experience in lab procedures, methods and instrumentation;
  • Must hold and maintain a current valid and lawful Class G Driver's Licence in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act, for the purposes of operating a City of Windsor vehicle and provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment
  • Must have knowledge of laboratory operations, industrial waste control and Sewer-Use By-law enforcement;
  • Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite of products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint);
  • Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work.
  • Will be required to complete and remain current as per the requirements of the Corporation’s Management Certificate Program.
  • Progression through the Art of Supervision Program Certificate or a supervisory program of a similar nature is considered an asset.
  • The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a sedentary level of work.
