DUTIES:

  • Reporting to the Manager of Occupational Health & Safety and Wellness, this position will be responsible to protect and improve the health and safety of all City of Windsor employees;
  • Will advise and assist the Corporation in its efforts to take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of its workers;
  • Will advise and assist the Corporation in complying with legislated obligations as they pertain to occupational health and safety.
  • Will facilitate and coordinate the development, maintenance, and audit of the Corporate Health and Safety Program. 
  • Responsibilities will include the development and delivery of occupational health and safety-training programs including lesson plans;
  • Will be required to investigate and report on incidences of workplace violence and/or harassment; provide advice in the area of accident/incident investigations as assigned;
  • Will be required to monitor and respond to 24/7 emergency line to respond to and take required actions for reports of critical injury/death, work refusals and incidences of workplace violence and/or harassment;
  • Assist in the departmental implementation of corporate policies and procedures; the development of departmental work plans; and monitor departmental compliance. 
  • Performs safety audits and hazard assessments including site audits, asbestos assessments, workplace violence risk assessments, occupational hygiene testing, respiratory protective equipment assessments, job hazard analyses and working alone assessments.
  • Completes research initiatives. 
  • Participates in joint health and safety committee meetings as requested and liaise with Joint Health and Safety Committee members;
  • Drafts safety procedures and work plans. 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence. 
  • Liaison and reporting with external agencies on behalf of the Corporation, such as the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Transportation, Technical Standards and Safety Authority, Ministry of the Environment and Emergency Services Personnel.
  • Will perform Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation's Health and Safety Program.
  • Will preform other related duties as required.

NOTE:  Occupational Health & Safety Advisors will be assigned to specific departments and consequently duties and hours of work will vary depending on needs.  Occupational Health & Safety Advisors could be rotated to other departments to create backup and encourage creativity.  Some local travel is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a University Degree preferably in the health & safety field (e.g. may include Human Kinetics, Ergonomics, Health & Safety, Health Sciences or Industrial Hygiene) or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of two (2) years of working experience in the health and safety field, hazard recognition and control, risk assessment; OR
  • Must have a post secondary school community College diploma preferably in the health & safety field (e.g. may include Human Kinetics, Ergonomics, Health & Safety, Health Sciences or Industrial Hygiene) or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency and a minimum of four (4) years of working experience in the health and safety field, hazard recognition and control, risk assessment;
  • Must hold and maintain a current valid and lawful driver’s licence in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and have use of a personal vehicle.  Must also provide a driver’s abstract as a condition of employment.
  • Must have a working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, associated regulations, standards, codes and guidelines and knowledge of the hazards associated with work;
  • Must be available for work outside of normal business hours, i.e. early morning, nights and weekends;
  • Must have research and analytical skills;
  • Must have excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Must have experience working in a computerized environment using the Microsoft Suite of Products;
  • Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work.
  • Working knowledge of the Canada Labour Code Part II and corresponding regulations and hazard identification will be considered an asset.
  • Municipal Health and Safety experience as well as a CRSP designation are considered definite assets;
  • Certification in Health & Safety from an accredited university or college will be considered a definite asset.
  • Additional courses in Health & Safety and certification in First Aid/CPR/Defibrillator would be considered a definite asset;
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Fire and Building Codes will be considered an asset;
  • The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a sedentary to medium level of work.
