DUTIES:

  • Reporting to the Director of Care, this position will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of all aspects of resident care to meet an optimal quality of life for residents, while complying with legislative requirements and standards of nursing practice;
  • Will perform supervisor on call duties and responsibilities;
  • Will act for the Director of Care in their absence;
  • Conducts internal inspections and reporting audits to identify areas of improvement;
  • Participates in developing, interpreting and implementing of the nursing division’s philosophy, objectives, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Provide supervision of nursing staff, shift work as needed; Will maintain open line of communication with residents and families and address elevated care issues for enhanced outcomes.  
  • Assess the quality of nursing care provided by nursing staff including performance evaluations;
  • Assists in the recruitment and orientation of staff;
  • Responsible in conjunction with the Director of Care for training and development;
  • Ensures compliance with appropriate collective agreements;
  • Recommends the discipline of nursing staff when necessary; prepares reports as directed;
  • Ensures the maintenance of residents’ rights; Ensures appropriate safety measures are adhered to;
  • Serves as Infection Control Officer and maintains/monitors appropriate statistics;
  • Conducts staff meetings as required;
  • Maintains an awareness of appropriate and current research and developments in gerontology and nursing care;
  • Other duties as assigned under Emergency Preparedness Plan;
  • Develop and maintain continuous quality improvements including computerized care classification;
  • Will support RAI MDS programs and act as back-up for Clinical Care Supervisor;
  • Will perform Occupational Health and Safety duties as outlined in the Corporation’s Health & Safety program;
  • Will perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a university degree in Nursing, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency combined with two (2) years of experience in the field of geriatric, rehabilitation or long-term care in a computerized environment; OR
  • Must have a post secondary school community college diploma in Nursing, or Ontario Ministry of Education equivalency, combined with four (4) years of experience in the field of geriatric, rehabilitation or long-term care in a computerized environment;
  • Must hold and maintain a current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse;
  • Supervision experience of front line staff in an unionized environment will be considered an asset;
  • Working knowledge of the Long Term Care Homes Act and its regulation will be considered an asset;
  • Experience/working knowledge of RAI MDS and CIHI reporting will be considered an asset;
  • Should have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, its regulations and knowledge of the hazards associated with the work;
  • Will be required to complete and remain current, per the requirements of the Corporation’s Management Certificate Program.
  • Progression through the Art of Supervision Program Certificate or a supervisory program of similar nature is considered an asset.
  • The physical demands analysis associated with this job indicates a light level of work.
